25 Days of Thanks Challenge: Day 12

Today I am Thankful for...SLEEP!

Oh how I love my sleep! My husband and I used to joke that our favorite things to do early in our marraige was eat and sleep. We often stayed in bed on Saturday mornings until 10 a.m. and in the Summer, often later. It wasn't unusual to catch us napping on the couch Saturday afternoons as well and ALWAYS after church on Sundays.

Along Came Elena:
Though it was tough when we first brought her home (she had her nights and days mixed up) she followed in her mommy and daddy's footsteps within three weeks and was a champion sleeper. She loved nap times and it wasn't unusual for her to sleep from 7pm to 8am. Sleeping until 10 in the morning was now out of the question for us but we still got in our Sunday afternoon naps.

THEN came Kate:
At seven months of age, she still has not regularly accomplished the task of sleeping through the night. I can probably count on one hand how many times she has slept from 11-6. A GOOD night for her is sleeping from 10:30 to 3a.m. (wake up & be comforted by Mommy) then 3-6:30. She may or may not take a morning nap and then may or may not take an afternoon nap. Either way, they never last longer than an hour and a half. I know she'll get it one day, and I try to be thankful for the time that I have with her in the middle of the night (or ALL night some nights). I know there will probably be a day that comes where I actually miss this time.

I have learned to cope with little to no sleep and now have a MUCH greater appreciation for the sleep I do get. So, for my 12th day I give thanks for sleep (and maybe I'll get some tonight)

What are YOU thankful for? Check out the "25 Days of Thanks" tab at the top of the page and link up below!

  1. I LOVE my sleep too! I'm like an old farmer though...I like to be down with the sun and back up in the morning with the sun....But when its that time inbetween I really don't like to be messed with!

  2. Tess is such a good sleeper, I worry that if we have a second one we're doomed. That said, she didn't sleep though the night with any regularity until Thanksgiving week last year when I laid down the law, and on the floor in her bedroom and insisted she self soothe.

The key for her? The pacifier!! I slept on her floor and comforted her when she woke up for a straight week, but I didn't pick her up, I just showed her how to find the paci. I knew she didn't need to eat because if I offered the opportunity to nurse she'd only take a few sips and then just hang out looking at me. So instead, I gave her about 10 pacifiers (since she couldn't crawl to find them in her crib) so they'd always be one nearby and kept popping them in her mouth.

I see Kate likes a pacifier - maybe 10-15 of them in her crib will help you too!

  3. Ahhh Sleep! Defiantly one of my favorite activities! LOL! I lucked out with both of my girls. Thank goodness they LOVE to sleep just as much as their Mama! I will say however that I am quite a night owl. It's the naps that I love. Now my Husband on the other hand..... well, that's a whole different story!

  4. We are the same way. We often can't live in our home unless you take naps. Both times I gave birth we spent our time sleeping. The nurses were always amazed that are babies slept and warned us that it wouldn't be the same when they got home. The Lord blessed us with children that are a lot like us. Sleep...ah Sleep.
